For two decades, we’ve seen that governance isn’t just about policies. It’s about culture. Data protection, privacy, security, each required employees to internalize responsibility, not just follow checklists.
With AI, the same applies: leadership must define risk appetite, teams need training, and governance must empower responsible use without blocking innovation.
If we keep repeating the cycle, AI governance will be another story of panic, fines, and missed opportunities. The alternative is clear: learn from the past twenty years and apply those lessons now.
That means:
Embedding explainability, verification, and accountability into every AI project.
Treating governance as a trust multiplier, not a compliance tax.
Anticipating regulation before it lands — not scrambling afterwards.
We’ve had two decades of warnings: data scandals, privacy breaches, security failures, GDPR lessons. The patterns are obvious.
But the current AI gold rush shows how easily organizations forget. History doesn’t have to repeat itself. If we finally act on what the last twenty years have taught us.
AI governance is not optional. It is the difference between sustainable trust and the next avoidable crisis.
